Nutritional Concerns for Vegetarians, Vegans and Everyone Else

Sunlight and Preventing Osteoporosis

Vegans do not eat any animal products while some vegetarians eat dairy products and eggs but do not eat meat or fish. Some people will be vegetarians for many years and then they will try eating meat and feel much better. Then they go back to eating meat since they think that they need it. This is due to a shortage of vitamin B-12. It is said that it can be stored for years in the body before someone runs low on it. Many vegetarians tested show a shortage of vitamin B-12. Dietitians say that only animal foods contain B-12. I say "All rules have exceptions, except some."

The best source of B-12 is blue-green algae with more B-12 than liver. One kind is spirulina and another kind is Lake Klammath blue-green algae. Other sources that are supposed to have B-12 are maca, aloe vera, brewers yeast, barley grass, bee pollen (not vegan) and dong quai. Animal foods like meat have B-12 but are a bad source since eating animal foods require more B-12. Also the meat eaters have the same percentage of people deficient in B-12 as vegetarians. Many taking the above supplements still have a shortage so many use a B-12 supplement. The kind that dissolves in your mouth is supposed to be the best.

The latest research shows that there are different forms (analogues) of vitamin B-12. Some forms are active and some are not. Tests on a few plant foods show that they are inactive. It is unknown whether the above have active forms of B-12 or not so the supplement is the best for now. Too little B-12 causes too much homocysteine and thin artery walls causing strokes, heart attacks and aneurysms.

Also Americans do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids. It acts as a lubricant for the brain, skin, blood vessels and the rest of the body. It is just as important as any required nutrient for the body like iron or vitamin C. An excellent source of it is fish. There are smaller amounts in soybeans, canola oil, pumpkin seeds and walnuts. An excellent source of it is flaxseed oil.

I used milled flaxseeds which contains the oil and one of the best fibers for the colon. It is high in lignans which prevent cancer. Health food stores sell it and snacks made with flaxseed. Another excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids are blue-green algae like spirulina. Fish get their omega-3s from eating algae. See Health Food Store on links at the bottom.

Another concern is something that Americans do not get enough of-- Vitamin D. Lack of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B-12 can cause lots of problems and shorten your life span. Shortage of vitamin D can cause prostate cancer. According to Gabe Mirken M.D. (his website), lack of vitamin D contributes to breast cancer. But most importantly Americans are concerned with getting enough calcium to prevent osteoporosis. But the body cannot use the calcium without enough vitamin D. This is why they add vitamin D to milk (which has a lot of calcium in it) and say that it builds strong bones and muscles.

In countries where they consume a lot less calcium, they have lower levels of osteoporosis. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Calcium is not the weakest link in Americans. There is enough calcium in milk, cheese, cream and ice cream to build a thousand pound cow. The main ingredient in cow's milk is calcium caseinate. The main ingredient in human mother's milk is sodium caseinate. The weakest link in the American diet is vitamin D. Although some say that when animal proteins are digested, it causes an overload of acid called acidosis. The body buffers this with calcium phosphate which it takes out of the bones. But lots of foods have calcium.

That is not the case with vitamin D. There are no good food sources of it except cod livers. But this is great! It is the most toxic vitamin there is. One time I was telling a woman that since herbs (nutritional ones, not medicinal ones) are foods so you do not have to worry about taking too much. On the other hand that is not the case with vitamin/mineral supplements. I told her that too many vitamin/mineral supplements can kill you. Then she mentioned the preservatives in them. I said that they are unhealthy but won't kill you.

There are oil soluble vitamins that you cannot urinate out if you have too much. Too much vitamin A results in liver failure that leads to death. One of over 200 functions of the liver is to prevent toxins that you consume from going into the body to hurt it. But the liver can handle 4 times as much vitamin A than vitamin D before it kills you. Note-- vitamin/mineral supplements are not foods. There is a little bit of vitamin D in fish and mushrooms. So where are you supposed to get it from? I just learned from the internet that kelp (a seaweed- sold whole or granulated) is a good vegetable source of vitamin D, possibly the only one. Mushrooms (a fungus) are also supposed to contain some vitamin D.

Sunlight and Osteoporosis

As mentioned before calcium cannot be used without vitamin D. Americans get plenty of calcium but foods contain hardly any vitamin D. Read previous section. The D that they add to milk is not that useable since it is not a food. A study done in England showed that the people with the highest rates of skin cancer spent a large amount of time under florescent lights and got very little sunlight. So if this applies to you and you had skin cancer then maybe you should not blame it on your jeans (correct spelling-- genes).

Also say you make a list of carcinogens (cancer causing substances) like DDT, gasoline, saccharine, titanium dioxide, chloroform, formaldehyde, benzene and methyl bromide. Then divide the list into artificial (manmade) things and natural substances that humans would have much contact with. You will find that all the items go on one side of the list which is why cancer was rare 200 years ago. For millions of years humans have had a great deal of contact with sunlight. Also skin cancer is much more prevalent in areas further from the equator where the sun is weaker than close to the equator where the sunlight is the strongest. Also read the first 4 paragraphs under Natural Healing about a guy who had skin cancer and then had a lot of sunlight and got rid of it.

The skin produces pre-vitamin D from sunlight. If you get a lot of sunlight, it can produce a lot of pre-vitamin D. But this pre-vitamin D is not toxic so the body can store it unlike the little you get from food or get in a vitamin or from milk. Then the body can turn it into vitamin D as you need it so your body is always getting the perfect amount of it. So you can sunbathe in a bathing suit or, if in a private area, you can sunbathe nude. Then after that you can wash your skin of all the cancer causing chemicals that you have sweated out of your body and that is left behind after the water evaporates. The same principle is how distilling water purifies it as told about on the page on pure water.

For more on sunlight see "Fat Loss Tips" on home page. This has been studied thoroughly. Below the 40th latitude (around Philadelphia) you can get vitamin D from sunlight all year round. At the latitude of Boston you cannot get vitamin D from sunlight for 3 months no matter how much you are in the sunlight. At the latitude of Montreal, Canada you cannot get vitamin D from the sun for 5 months of the year. This is centered around the least brightest day of the year in the northern hemisphere-- the first day of winter.

If you think sunlight is bad for you, see this article about 5 ways to get cancer. The New York Times Bestseller, Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You to Know About by Kevin Trudeau ( 2004) says "Get natural sunlight. Go for a walk in the sun! Your body needs sunlight. Do not use sunglasses or sun screens. Thirty minutes a day, minimum, promotes incredible health benefits....The solar energy from the sun can be very alkalizing to the body; it reduces depression and strengthens your immune....The sun is good for you and its absolutely needed."

To benefit from sunlight, all you have to do is go outside. That is because, even though the sun is almost a hundred million miles away, the sunlight travels a hundred million miles through space to get to you so you can benefit from it. Arnold Schwarzennegar would do weight training at night so he could sunbathe in the afternoon. But he said that the ultimate place to lift weights is outside in the sunlight. He would do this at Venice Beach, CA. Weight bearing exercise is very effective at reversing osteoporosis and increasing bone density.

Most important is an addition from a brilliant doctor, Joel Fuhrman, M.D. He wrote a book on fasting and diet (see bottom of fasting page for a description and link to it) that received praise from many MDs. He mentions 4 studies that show that osteoporosis is also caused by diets high in protein, salt, refined sugar, caffeine and phosphoric acid in some soft drinks. He also says that the American diet that is high in protein is the main cause of heart attacks and strokes.

Prostate Problems Including Prostate Cancer

According to the 500 page college textbook, Human Biology by Sylvia S Mader (1995) prostate cancer is very different than the other types of cancer. It says about prostate cancer "The disease is most common in northwestern Europe and North America. It is rare in the Near East, Africa, Central America, and South America. For reasons not currently known, African Americans have the highest incidence rate in the world."

Are you wondering why this is since it may affect you. It is because black skinned people need 4 times the sunlight as white skinned people to get the same amount of vitamin D. The prostate gland thrives on vitamin D from sunlight. In a magazine they wanted to see if there were certain things affecting prostate problems like pollution in certain parts of the country. So they gave different colors to different percentages of people with these problems and then applied those colors to a map of the U.S. They found the color with the highest amount of problems went across the most northern part of the U.S. Then as they went further south the percentage of people with prostate problems became lower and lower. So they determined that this was due to the unique vitamin D from the sun.

As far as danger from sunbathing, make sure to wash off all those cancer causing chemicals that you sweated onto your skin from inside your body. They do not evaporate like the water. Even if you do not, it is still better on your skin than inside you. But the UV-C rays from the sun can completely destroy your skin so you must never, ever under any circumstances, go sunbathing ON THE MOON. All of the UV-C rays from the sun are completely destroyed in the earth's atmosphere. You see nature is not out to get you. It is you living in a way out of touch with nature and against what your body needs that causes these health problems. Here is information on a study (see bottom of it) showing that vitamin D can cut chances of getting prostate cancer by 50%. If you think sunlight is bad for you see this article about 5 ways to get cancer.
