Colds and the Flu

See our privacy policy. Definition 1 of flu is influenza which is a myxovirus whereas a cold is usually a rhinovirus. The flu has a fever and a cold has a low-grade fever. Definition 2 of  "flu" is any virus so I will use that one to cover colds and flu. This is according to Mosby's (1994) Medical, Nursing, & Allied Health Dictionary with 1900 pages and 100 consultants. Other sources disagree.

Colds are called that due to an association with cold weather. We know that a virus is a germ that you catch. But modern medicine knows people with a very good immune system do not get colds or the flu no matter how much contact they have with the germs. Why is it that the flu season is during the cold weather?

Many things can strengthen or weaken the immune system. You can look at these things as affecting general health. The body is always trying to be as healthy as possible. In the warm weather people sweat more getting rid of a lot of toxins. In the cold weather, they sweat a lot less. Sleep helps the body get rid of toxins. Eating increases toxins. Also the holidays causes many to eat more and sleep less. So a combination of overeating, not enough sleep and not enough sweating makes the body get backed up with toxins. But the body wants to improve things. [Latest News-- October 2009] The New York Times recently reported on a study that found that those who get less than seven hours of sleep a night are three times as likely to catch a cold as those who sleep at least eight hours a night.

As far as sweating getting rid of toxins, the skin is one of the 4 excretory organs of the body. The other 3 are the lungs, liver and kidneys. The colon (large intestine) is an organ of elimination. It is not an excretory organ since it is outside the body proper. That is medical talk. Taking hot baths during a cold will help you sweat more.

You may be too busy with work and things to get enough sleep but the body knows that by allowing a flu to develop it will force you to eat less and sleep more. You already know that during the flu you should drink plenty of liquids and get plenty of rest and sleep. Mark Twain suggests fasting when you have the flu. He says "A little starvation can really do more for the average sick man than can the best medicines and the best doctors. I do not mean a restricted diet; I mean total abstinence from food for one or two days. I speak from experience; starvation has been my cold and fever doctor for 15 years, and has accomplished a cure in all instances." The book, Prescription for Natural Healing (by James Balch M.D. and Phyllis Balch CNC), says "When you feel a cold or illness coming on or are just depressed-- fast!"

By fasting or eating as little as possible, it helps the body to detoxify faster. So fasting enables you to get over the flu as fast as possible. So the flu is actually good for your health and you end up healthier after the flu. But by eating, not getting enough sleep and/or taking drugs for it, you could end up worse or the flu lasts a long time. When you lose your appetite, your body is telling you not to eat. Also what you eat determines how much toxins you are taking in.

So eat foods with the fewest toxins to make immune system better. See home page for more on this but they are unprocessed plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains. Note that all foods in the above have plenty of fiber while in refined grains they take out a lot of fiber. Animal foods have no fiber at all. Foods with the most toxins include junk food, ice cream, meat, fish (which is now worse than ever) and all the wheat products. The news says to totally avoid the fish that eat the most fish like shark, swordfish and mackerel. Tuna are mackerel and they eat more fish than other mackerel.

If you cannot fast then just eat fruit, especially ones high in vitamin C, like oranges, mango, grapefruit, papaya and strawberries, until you get better. Eating nothing or only fruits will enable your body to get over a cold or the flu as soon as possible. Exercise and saunas help you sweat more which decreases your need of getting a cold. When the weather is nicer, people get more sunlight and therefore more vitamin D which makes their immune system stronger. Movement (like with exercise) helps the circulation of lymphatic system helping your immune system work better.

[Latest News-- February 2009] This US News article explains that a large study shows that too little vitamin D increases the risk of colds and flus. It says "We don't want to jump ahead of ourselves," said study author Dr. Adit Ginde, an assistant professor of surgery in the division of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. "But our study provides support that lower levels of vitamin D are associated with an increased risk for respiratory infections, such as the common cold and the flu. And people who have pre-existing respiratory disease -- like asthma and emphysema -- appear to be at an increased risk for this association." Adit Ginde, M.D. published a study conducted with about 19,000 adults and teens which found that those with low levels of vitamin D were 40 percent more likely to come down with a cold, the flu, or other respiratory infections.

There is an easier type of fasting that has become very popular. Since it is easier and supplies vitamin C in a food form it may be better for colds and flus. When it comes to vitamin pills you should try to avoid them. Studies show that they act differently in the body than vitamins in foods. Ask yourself this. Since vitamin C pills are so cheap (about 8 cents each) and each one (500mg) contains the amount of vitamin C in 7 whole oranges, then no one should ever get a cold or the flu. But the vitamin C in one whole orange is better for you than 100 vitamin C pills.

Try to buy organically grown produce until The USA becomes as civilized as Russia where it is against the law (a crime) to sell anything but organically grown produce. This alternate fast is discussed on the fasting webpage. It is called Master Cleanse, Lemonade Diet or the Master Cleanser Lemonade Fast. Lemon contains a lot of vitamin C like other citrus fruits (31 mg per lemon). This is an average since organic produce without pesticides has more nutrients than conventional produce. Ask your congressman when they are going to make produce with pesticides illegal since our little children consume them. This is a crime against humanity. Remember that black people used to be property (slaves) in the USA that you could buy and sell.

The Master Cleanse contains freshly squeezed lemon juice in water, grade B maple syrup and a tiny bit of cayenne pepper for circulation. Cayenne has a large amount of vitamin C. Two grams of it contains 1 mg of vitamin C. You cannot consume much of it since it is very hot (spicy). People can skip it altogether. It is not good for people with blood that is too thin. During the flu it is time to nurture yourself and take care of your health. I have not had a cold or the flu for 5 years since I fast and eat very healthy foods. But for years I would experiment and would get the flu every other year. One winter I would eat unhealthy food, like a lot of eggnog, and would get the flu. Then the next year I would fast and eat healthy foods in the winter and not get the flu. You will not get the flu if you do not need it.

Exercise helps you to avoid the flu. It causes you to sweat more. Then it also helps your blood circulation. It helps the lymphatic fluid in the lymphatic system to circulate better. This system does a lot to clean your body of debris, infections and other foreign invaders. According to Everything.com, Starve a Fever, Feed a Cold dates back to 1574 and was first penned by dictionary maker John Withals. The exact wording he used was "Fasting is a great remedie of feuer." I guess the spelling was different back then.

If you get a stomach virus or food poisoning, it is more obvious that you should not eat anything. If you do, you will feel worse and vomit up the food. Stress also weakens your immune system. Phi-- the Golden Ratio


The human body is based on 5 and phi-- the golden ratio.  The torso has 5 appendages. Each limb has 5 appendages. The face has 5 holes in it. Raise 5 to the 0.5 power (the square root of 5). Multiply it by 0.5 and add 0.5 and you get phi. All animals are based on phi. It is the ratio where when you divide something into 2 parts, the larger part is to the smaller part as the whole is to the larger part. Divide the smaller part into the larger part and you get a number larger than 1 (1.6180339...). Divide the larger number into the smaller number and you get the same number without the 1 (0.6180339...). In other words the inverse of phi is the same number but without the 1. The length of your head compared to the width of your head, the length of your upper body (above navel) compared to the length of your lower body and the length of your lower arm compared to the length of your upper arm are just some of the places on your body that have the golden ratio.

All trees and plants are based on the Fibonacci sequence where the next number is the sum of the two previous numbers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...). As this gets higher, the ratio of 2 numbers in sequence approaches phi-- the golden ratio. There is the very famous drawing of Leonardo Da Vinci of man (see drawing on the left). You Will Not Get the Flu if You Do Not Need To

Modern medicine knows that people can come in contact with the germs that cause the flu and not get it due to a great immune system. What do colds have to do with the cold weather? Why is the flu season during the cold weather? What is the fastest way to get over the flu and how do you avoid them altogether?

If your immune system is strong enough then you will not get the flu. When a person's health is too low, the body's intelligence tries to raise it. Its job is to constantly try to make the person healthy and fit, not fat. Its only goal is the best health possible. But people have many other priorities like entertainment, fun, being sociable, making money and being admired.

So when your health (immune system) drops too low, the body's intelligence tries to force you to do something about it. Your health and immune system are proportional to how clean or free of toxins the body is. Toxins include the body's metabolic waste. The body is constantly getting rid of toxins but sometimes it gets backed up. Things that help the body detoxify are heavy sweating caused by heat or exercise, sleeping, fasting and eating a light and healthy diet. The opposite things, like lack of sleep, causes the body to get backed up with these toxins.

During cold weather people get less sunlight which means less vitamin D (which is good for the immune system). Americans have a tendency to over eat and under sleep especially around the holidays. I saw on the forums before Thanksgiving that more people are asking about what to do about a cold.

So the body's intelligence allows you to get sick so you will do the things that you were unwilling to do, like taking off work, eating less and sleeping more. Then after the flu, you are healthier than you were before the flu. If you do not do these things then the flu can last a long time.
