Diets do not work. Among the people who do them, 99% of the people gain the weight back. Also the stress of not eating as much as you want makes your system more acid. This is bad for health and causes you to crave more sugar, salt and fat. Then eating these things you crave, causes you to hate yourself and you feel more stress making losing weight even harder. But many of the foods you like are acquired tastes.
Many experts will tell you conflicting things like how spinach is bad for you due to oxalates and that oranges are bad for people with certain blood types and all sorts of nonsense. But you can use the same instinct that animals use to know, not believe, what is good for you. Then you can tell these experts how you know, without any doubt, that they are absolutely wrong. First no one can tell you what foods you like and dislike. Only you know that.
Note that the article above on oxalates is from the New York Times and it is by Jane Brody. I have a big book by her on health and I even use a quote from it on my webpage about losing weight. She is a leading expert on health. But no one person can be expected to know everything. She has just never learned that she has the same instinct that animals have.
I have a book on nutrition, Bottom Line's Superfoods Rx (© 2008) by Steven Pratt, M.D. and Kathy Matthews. This book says that spinach has lutein, zeaxanthin (both prevent blindness), beta-carotene, omega-3s, alpha lipoic acid, glutathione, polyphenols, betaine and coenzyme Q10. It then has 6 pages about how good spinach is. But spinach also applies to other greens and when it lists blueberries, it also includes other berries. This book says that spinach is one of the terrific 23 superfoods that also include apples, avocado, beans, blueberries, broccoli, dark chocolate, garlic, honey, kiwi, oats, extra virgin olive oil, onions, oranges, pomegranates, pumpkin, wild salmon, soy, tea, tomatoes, turkey, walnuts and low-fat yogurt because of the pro-biotics in it.
Here is how it works. No one teaches the animal what to eat and what not to eat. The animal knows instinctively what is good to eat and what is not good to eat. Humans also have the same instinct. The way it works is just eat whatever tastes good and that will be healthy for you and non-fattening. That is why a baby puts everything in its mouth. It tastes everything. So again whatever tastes good, is good for you. This is why you will spit out spoiled milk. This instinct can help you lose weight.
I love eating Cabbage Crunch from the salad bar at Whole Foods. They are the largest natural foods supermarket chain in the country. Cabbage Crunch contains red and green cabbage, sliced almonds, poppy seeds, scallions (green onions), apple cider vinegar and olive oil. Cabbage is one of the healthiest foods for colon health and preventing cancer.
One time I got some. As soon as I put it in my mouth, I spit it out. It was spoiled. But I got my money back and they had someone go there to remove it. Please note that salt can dull your sense of taste. Also salt causes you to eat more thereby making it harder to lose weight.
But wait! Man has the technology to create rat poison. It tastes like healthy food (good taste) but kills the rat. So man has done that to you. Note that any food unaltered by man (uncooked) that tastes good, is good for you. So if you are stranded in the woods, that is how you know what to eat. Just taste everything raw and you will spit out the toxic plants since they will taste terrible. So the condition is that the food must be raw-- uncooked. Humans are the only animals that cook food.
There are poisonous mushrooms called toadstool mushrooms. If you put some raw ones in your mouth, you will spit them out since they taste horrible. But cook them and add salt and you can eat enough of them to kill you. Carnivorous animals love the taste of blood and raw meat since that is what they are supposed to eat.
So man has created fake fruit. It tastes like fruit that exists in nature, but it is addictive, fattening and terrible for health. It is called sweets. So it is natural to like real sweets called fruit, like a baby does. But they have fooled your sense of taste, just like the rat was fooled. But they do not want to kill you. They want you to become obese so you will buy more of their foods. This is called very good business. You can re-acquire your taste in food and re-learn how to eat. Then you can eat all the great tasting foods you want and be thin, healthy and fit for life.
Many people are afraid of not eating. There was a guy who was well known for walking on water, healing the sick and bringing the dead back to life who felt that He needed to fast for 40 days. Whether He did it for Himself or as an example of what others should do, the message is the same. It was also done by Socrates, Plato, Pythagoras, Buddha, Moses and Mahatma Gandhi. But fasting is also done by 'dumb' animals.
Here is how fasting works. Everyday your body takes in toxins and also produces metabolic waste. Most of this comes from eating. Also everyday your body is cleaning out these toxins and metabolic waste. But if you are taking it in faster than you are getting rid of it, then it will get backed up and build up in the body. This is when diseases develop depending on your genetic weaknesses or genetic predisposition. When you fast, you drastically reduce the toxins coming in and the metabolic waste being produced. This gives your body a chance to catch up on its cleaning. Your digestive system also gets a well needed vacation.
The New England Journal of Medicine says "Fasting is a valid experience. It can benefit any otherwise healthy person whose calories now have the upper hand in his/her life." Philippus Paracelsus, a Swiss physician and one of the 3 fathers of Western Medicine (including also Hippocrates and Galen), said "Fasting is the greatest remedy-- the physician within." Elson M Haas M.D. says on his website "Fasting is the single greatest healing therapy." Fasting saved his life.
If you fast to long, you can die but if you drink too much water at one time, you can die. The most common problems of modern day people, like being overweight, having trouble sleeping, feeling tired during the day and headaches, are the things that fasting is best for. When people ask about ways to cleanse the body, others will say that you do not need to do anything because the body is always cleansing itself.
This is true but if the toxins are going in at a faster rate than the body can get them out (cleansing), then they will grow larger and larger. This is similar to the two opposite medical processes that take place in the human body called anabolism and catabolism. This is the building up and the breaking down that is constantly taking place in the body. At the same time that the body is cleansing itself, you are eating and bringing in more toxins or creating metabolic waste to use medical jargon (2: the technical terminology or characteristic idiom of a special activity or group).
So when they say that you do not need to do anything to cleanse the body, the quickest way to cleanse the body is to do nothing, meaning to eat nothing, drink water and rest. Fasting gives your body a rest or vacation, especially the liver, digestive and elimination systems. Your body knows how to fast. When you are not using your mouth to bring in food, the body makes it into an organ of elimination. That is why your tongue gets coated while fasting.
Gabriel Cousins, MD, says "I often observe in the fasting participants that by four days of fasting, concentration seems to improve, creative thinking expands, depression lifts, insomnia stops, anxieties fade, the mind becomes more tranquil and a natural joy begins to appear. It is my hypothesis that when the physical toxins are cleared from the brain cells, mind-brain function automatically and significantly improves and spiritual capacities expands."
John Tilden, M.D., who fasted thousands of people in his Denver center, said "I must say in all seriousness that fasting when combined with a properly selected diet is the nearest approach to a 'cure-all' that is possible to conceive-- profoundly simple and simply profound!" With juice fasting, people can still work a job during it. During the water fast, it is best to just rest. Alex Carrel, M.D. (famous scientist) says "The elimination of waste products by fasting increases longevity."
Prescription for Natural Healing by James Balch M.D. and Phyllis Balch CNC says "Fasting is an effective and safe method of detoxifying the body...A technique that wise men have used for centuries to heal the sick. Fast regularly and help the body heal itself and stay well. Give all of your organs a rest. Fasting can help reverse the aging process, and if we use it correctly we will live longer, happier lives. Fasting is the best thing for anti-aging.
Each time you complete a fast, you will feel better. Your body will have a chance to heal and rebuild its immune system by regularly fasting. You can fight off illness and the degenerative diseases so common in this chemically polluted environment we live in. When you feel a cold or illness coming on or are just depressed-- fast!" That is why you lose your appetite-- your body is telling you to stop eating.
Salt is not a food. It is a rock. If you put 4 ounces of salt in water and drink it, you will die due to all that sodium. There are websites that say that you need salt. They are selling salt. Then they say that regular salt is bad but their salt is good for you. But it still has the sodium in it that will kill you. No fossils of man that are over 10,000 years old have salt in them. So they figured that that is when people began eating salt. They have skeletons of people that are millions of years old.
The refrigerator is only a recent invention. Fruits and vegetables can be kept un-refrigerated but animal products need to be kept cold. Salt kills bacteria so that would help keep animal products to stay good a little longer. It could be used to keep foods from going bad, until they could ferment. It kills life. It is used to rub into cuts to torture people like in the movie, Passion of the Christ.
When people consume salt, the body is constantly trying to get rid of it but can only get rid of so much per day with you consuming more everyday. So it stores the excess under the skin. The body needs to absorb a lot of water to keep it from being toxic. So salt causes a lot of water weight. This is how Beyonce lost 20 pounds in 10 days with the lemonade diet. She lost all that excess salt so she could lose all that water weight. Now if she starts consuming salt again she will gain it back. But if she only has a little salt, she will not gain it back.
LATEST NEWS: In an effort to reduce high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, the American Medical Association (www.ama-assn.org) is urging "the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to revoke the 'generally recognized as safe' (GRAS) status of salt and to develop regulatory measures to limit sodium in processed and restaurant foods." Vitamins and minerals have a minimum RDA (recommended daily allowance). All of them have this except salt. Instead it has a maximum RDA.
If you look in the foods made by nature they have around 15 milligrams of sodium. But when you look at man-made foods, you have a large pizza with 3,000+ mg of sodium or a can of chicken noodle soup with 2,000+ mg of sodium. An avocado has 21 mg of sodium but 1,400 mg of potassium making it a very healthy food for you.
The body determines how much water you need by the concentration of sodium in it. This is why you can be on a raft in the ocean surrounded by water and die of dehydration. You will only get more dehydrated drinking the ocean water or your salty urine. This is why I call salt anti-water. It makes it so water will not work.
The FDA has on their webpage, Healthier Eating (May-June 2005 Issue [most recent]) a chapter called "Lower Sodium and Increase Potassium". The book, The Rice Diet Solution (Â©2006) by Kitty Gurkin Rosati R.D. and Robert Rosati M.D. says that in addition to salt causing water retention, it also stimulates the appetite causing people to eat more. Look at the labels on all these man made foods, like Lean Cuisine, and see how much sodium is in them.
During the first 5 days of a fast the body dumps huge amounts (up to 80,000 mg per day) of salt so it gets rid of all the excess salt. So this is why someone can lose up to 15 pounds of weight during the first 5 days of a fast. They lose 15 pounds of water. When they start eating a lot of salt they gain it back.
If the body continued to lose Na (chemical abbreviation for sodium) after this excess is removed then the person would die after a few more days of fasting due to lack of Na instead of being able to fast a month. But the body no longer needs to get rid of it so the sweat and urine are no longer salty. But due to ignorance, some people think they need to replace this salt since the body is getting rid of it. Sweating helps you lose retained water since you are sweating out excess salt.
First of all by default wheat refers to refined wheat and rice refers to white rice. These are not whole grains. What makes them so bad for you is the good stuff was taken out and the bad stuff was left in. It is like taking a person and taking the good out of them and leaving what is evil in them. So when you eat these foods they need to rob your body of the good things that were in them so you can digest them.
Over time this destroys your health. Then they create all these foods with wheat like pancakes, waffles, french toast, cream of wheat, bread, pasta, muffins, biscuits, soft and hard pretzels, cakes, cookies, crackers, donuts, bagels, blintzes, perogies, lasagna, sandwiches, burgers, pies, pizza and strombolis. Whole wheat and brown rice are whole grains and so are not unhealthy.
The whole wheat is not great for health though, but it is cheap. It is better to use other grains like rye, barley, kamut, spelt, quinoa, millet and wild rice. Wild rice is not a rice. It is the only grain that is native to North America. The wheat and rice is originally with 3 parts. To refine it, they take off the bran. This has most of the fiber and a lot of anti-oxidants. This is then sold in the heath food store. The wheat and rice are sold in the fat and sick food store.
Then they take off the germ and that is sold in the health food store. It has most of the nutrition. The part that is left is called endosperm. That is what rice and wheat are-- rice and wheat endosperm. It is mostly carbohydrates. So that is why this food makes you fat and sick. Whole wheat may be bland but brown rice tastes as good as white rice. It has a nuttier taste. Many Indians have switched from basmati rice to brown basmati rice.
The Chinese/Japanese restaurant near me serves brown rice and half the people going there request that. Cracked wheat is good because it is raw. A friend of mine likes to cook quinoa since it only takes 15 minutes to cook. Instead of cream or wheat, you can buy buckwheat groats and make that as a hot cereal. You can sweeten it with blackstrap molasses or maple syrup. A very healthy grain to cook is amaranth. It takes about 15 minute to cook. Wild rice takes 50 minutes to cook but Trader Joes sells it cooked so you just need to heat it up.
100% organic durum wheat semolina is refined wheat, not whole wheat since it does not say "whole." The wheat germ is 2.5% of the whole wheat kernel but it contains 64% of the thiamine (vitamin B1), 26% of the riboflavin (vitamin B2) and 21% of the pyridoxine (vitamin B6). The wheat bran is 14% of the wheat kernel, but contains 73% of the pyridoxine, 50% of the pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), 42% of the riboflavin and 33% of the thiamine. The wheat endosperm is 83% of the wheat kernel, but it has 3% of the thiamine, 6% of the pyridoxene, 12% of the niacin (vitamin B3) and 32% of the ribflavin.
These B vitamins are important for mental health. The book, Nutrition Almanac (4th edition 1996-- over 2.5 million sold) says "If a person is tired, irritable, nervous, depressed, or even suicidal, suspect a vitamin B deficiency."
To start with, the artificial sweeteners should be avoided like the plague. They are many times sweeter than sugar and have had very bad effects on people including making people fatter. They are not foods and are more like drugs. Now the sugar cane is not really bad for health. It is what they do to it.
This is similar to what they do with wheat and rice. They take the nutritious part of the sugar cane out. It is a thick black liquid called blackstrap molasses. It is sweet and sold in the health food store. It is very nutritious with lots of potassium, iron and chromium. People report that a tablespoon of it can lower blood pressure quickly.
A tablespoon of blackstrap molasses has 360 mg of potassium, but a tablespoon of organic blackstrap molasses has 720 mg of potassium. It is right on the labels to read for people who think that there is no difference if something is organic or loaded with pesticides. The part that is left is called sugar and has calories, but no nutrition.
They advertise for people to buy chromium supplements since it is needed to metabolize sugar. The sugar robs your body of the chromium and other things. If blackstrap molasses is sold in the health food store, where is the sugar sold? It is sold in the fat and sick food store. Health food stores now have Succanat-- a better version of dried cane juice. Dried cane juice (also called turbinado sugar) takes out some of the good stuff. Succanat is the sugar cane without taking out any of the good stuff. It is not brown sugar. Brown sugar is regular sugar with a little molasses added. It is not healthy.
The big manufacturers use the cheapest ingredients to save money regardless of what it does to you. So they like using artificial (chemical) sweeteners and corn syrup which is slightly worse than sugar. There are healthy alternatives that health food stores have and they are ingredients in some health foods. Some have the ingredients called sugar cane and invert sugar cane. The former is regular even if it says organic sugar cane. The latter is just like corn syrup.
The healthy sweeteners are raw honey, pure maple syrup, agave (a syrup from a cactus), barley malt, stevia ( a healthy herb that is sweeter than sugar) and rice syrup. The dried cane juice may not be the healthiest sweetener but it is fine as an ingredient in something. The blackstrap molasses is healthy. The sugar that is already in foods, like in fruit, are the healthiest sweet things. The agave enters the blood very slowly ("slow as molasses") making it especially good for diabetics and weight loss.
Bottom Line's Super Foods Rx, by Steven Pratt M.D. and Kathy Matthews says, "Honey contains at least 181 known substances, and its antioxidant activities stems from phenolics, peptides, organic acids and enzymes. Honey also contains salicylic acid, minerals, alpha-tocopherol and oligosaccharides. Oligosaccharides increase the number of good bacteria in the colon, reduces levels of toxic metabolites in the intestine, help prevent constipation and help lower cholesterol and blood pressure."
This information is for ingredients when making something or buying something and reading the ingredients. It is much healthier to eat sweet fruit on an empty stomach like watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi fruit, mango, pineapple, apples, oranges, pears and grapes. Try to get organically grown fruit when it is possible.
Here is a health drink you can make. Buy raw (unfiltered if possible) apple cider vinegar, like Bragg's. Patricia Bragg has been drinking this her whole life. Her father, who helped start the health movement in America, got her on this. She has written a small book about apple cider vinegar. She (once a day is better than nothing) suggests taking it 3 times a day, upon arising, mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
Put 1 to 2 teaspoons (tsps) of vinegar (only the above, no other kind) in 8 fl oz of pure water. Add 1 to 2 tsps of raw honey, 100% maple syrup, blackstrap molasses or 4 drops of herb stevia. She says that Hippocrates used it in 400 BC for cleansing, healing and energizing health qualities. She also fasts one day a week and 3 days at the beginning of each month. I figure that is about 1 week out of almost every 4 weeks.
People know that by eating a high protein and low carb, low fat diet, they will lose weight. But it is not worth it. When you eat too much of carbs or fats, you store it as body fat. When you eat too much protein, where do you store it? Your body cannot store it. The body has to get rid of it. It breaks it down. People eat way too much protein. When the protein is broken down, it creates toxins and acids. The body becomes too acidic which leads to many health problems. The American Dietetic Association says that vegans [they eat no animal foods-- no meat, fish, fowl, eggs or dairy] eat twice the amount of protein that they need.
The acids cause your body to remove calcium from your bones to neutralize the acids (see bottom of article). The toxins from the breakdown of protein, attacks your arteries and can lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. College textbooks on nutrition say that protein deficiency is rare in the world and does not exist in this part of the world (U.S.A.). That means that while there are millions of people starving because they are not getting enough carbs and fats, it is rare to get enough of them but not enough protein.
There is nothing magical about protein. Some people will say that some food provides whole protein, but almost all do. Protein is made up of 8 essential amino acids and that is all (now there are 9-- see below). Almost all fruits and vegetables have all 8 essential amino acids. An avocado has 4 grams of protein and 4.2 grams of fiber. Animal foods have no fiber. It is 60% fat, but this fat is anti-inflammatory. Here are the amino acids that make up the protein in an avocado:

133 mg of threonine
143 mg of isoleucine
247 mg of leucine
189 mg of lycine
74 mg of methionine
137 mg of phenolalanine
195 mg of valine
A cup of navy beans has 19.7 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. It has all 8 amino acids and the smallest amount is 233 mg of tryptophan. The above comes from the book, Nutrition Almanac, 4th Edition (1996). It says that histadine is an essential amino acid in infants and it has been added to the 8 essential ones for adults. But it was added after they tested hundreds of foods for the 8 amino acids. A potato has 4.7 grams of protein, 1.2 grams of fiber and all 8 amino acids with the lowest being 73 mg of tryptophan and methionine. Four ounces of pistachio nuts have 23.2 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, 8 amino acids with the least being 320 mg of tryptophan.
The magic is in the thousands of different phytochemicals that are in plant foods that prevent blindness, prevent cancer, prevent heart attacks and that prevent strokes. More than 900 different phytochemicals have been found in plant foods and more will be discovered. For example lycopene that makes tomatoes, grapefruit and watermelon red. Also there is lutein, resveratrol, (indole-3-carbinol), anthocyanins and many more.
Lutein and zeaxanthin, in spinach prevent blindness in old age. The John Hopkins University School of Medicine found that the sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts "may reduce the risk of cancer, a disease of many factors" according to their group, the Brassica Foundation. So they bred broccoli high in this phytochemical and patented it.
The brain needs lots of carbs. If a person does not get enough, he can get depressed. This can lead to someone killing themselves. So it is not worth it to lose some weight and end up dead. Also the brain needs plenty of carbohydrates for you to sleep well. If you are not getting enough carbs, that can make it hard to sleep leading to mental problems and even a nervous breakdown.
Of course the good carbs from foods made by nature like fruits and vegetables are good for you. The bad carbs from foods made by man are bad for you, like cookies, donuts and candy. These foods are designed to make you fat and addicted to food. The unholy grains, like wheat and rice are also bad for you. The whole grains like whole wheat, brown rice, wild rice, millet, barley, buckwheat, kamut, spelt and quinoa are good for you.
Fats are needed to lubricate the brain, arteries and skin. A lack of good fat (like omega-3) can cause you to become depressed. It can also lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes. Also it can cause skin problems. The bad fats are bad for you. But the good fats are good for you. Fish cannot be included as good fats since there is too much mercury in them from pollution. But you can get good fat from avocados. It is 60% fat and it is great for you. It is even anti-inflammatory which can help your joints.
When they are soft but not mushy, they are good to eat. Sometimes they have brown in them and they are not good so it is like a gamble buying them. But it is well worth it. Other good fats are olives, olive oil, canola oil, nuts and seeds. Studies with olive oil show that it helps your arteries and helps you to be thinner. Flaxseeds, walnuts and pumpkin seeds are good sources of omega --3s, a fat that people do not get enough of. President Bush takes an omega--3 supplement.
Americans eat way too much protein which is why most of them get myocardial infarctions or cerebrovascular accidents (AKA heart attacks or strokes) according to book, Fasting and Eating for Health (1995), by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. Americans consume 5 times the protein they need causing 50% of them, over 65, to have hypertension (AKA high blood pressure).
Yet in some places in the world, high blood pressure is rare. The American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org) says not to have more than 6 ounces a day of meat, fish or poultry. The saturated fat in meat is also bad for you (increases cholesterol levels). So in studies, they had people switch from beef to a leaner meat like chicken. But they got more protein bite-for-bite and had no improvement in cardiovascular health. Studies show that fruits and vegetables prevent cancer. Meat causes cancer according to this big study done.
That book, Nutrition Almanac, says "A vegetarian diet full of fruits and vegetables and grains has been found to be the most helpful in lowering or eliminating high blood pressure." 40% of Americans over age 40 have high blood pressure. Kevin Trudeau says in More Natural Cures Revealed (© 2006) "The meat [beef] ...is loaded with drugs, growth hormone, as well as feces and urine.... The fact is cows are vegetarian and should not be eating the type of feed given to them. Specifically they should not be eating ground up pigs, horses, goats, and other cows, most of which were sick and diseased and not capable of butchering for human consumption."
David Williams, D.C. (Alternatives Newsletter) says that women live longer since menstruation causes them to lose iron. He cites New England Journal of Medicine (N Eng L Med 03;348 (19):1835-1837). Donating blood helps you get rid of excess iron and so does fasting. The 3 fathers of modern medicine (Hippocrates, Galen and Paracelsus) all used fasting. See this: Haemochromatosis.
Frederic Vagnini, MD, assistant clinical professor at Weill Cornell Medical College and medical director for the Heart, Diabetes and Weight -Loss Centers of New York, says (page 41 in Bottom Line Yearbook 2008), "Never take a supplement for iron without consulting your physician-- excess iron can accumulate in your major organs and cause severe damage."

Page 39 says "Multiple studies have linked osteoporosis not to low calcium intakes, but to diets high in protein, refined sugar, caffeine, and phosphorus contained in soft drinks, all of which cause an excessive loss of calcium in the urine." "In fact, populations that consume the highest levels of calcium usually have the highest rates of osteoporosis-related hip fractures." [Mazess RB, Mather W. Bone mineral content of North American Eskimos. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1974;27:916-925.] "The U.S. RDA (recommended daily allowance) for protein is 44 grams for a young woman. This includes a two-fold safety factor, which doubles the minimum requirements as determined by nitrogen balance studies."
"Plant products contain an abundance of protein, without being excessive (page 40). How else can the gorilla get to be 800 pounds of muscle, eating solely fruit and leaves?"
